It is impossible to categorise Villa Iason, for this accommodation is truly without equal, offering a level of comfort and sophistication never before associated with Cretan self-catering accommodation and an air of intimacy and privacy that even the best-run hotels could never hope to achieve.
The nearest one might get to an in-a-nutshell description of Villa Iason is to call it the modern-day equivalent of a traditional manor house, where benevolent hosts take pride in sharing their grand surroundings with summer guests, without ever infringing their visitors’ privacy.
Your hosts are Michael and Clary, a charming and cultured couple from Chania who together run the town’s most successful dental practice. To reward themselves for their success, Michael and Clary have built their dream family home in substantial grounds just outside Maleme, which has since become the talk of the town in this unpretentious coastal village. They also created some equally impressive guest accommodation, not so much for economic reasons as for the fact that both enjoy stimulating company and conviviality.
Adjoining the main house, but fully self-contained and accessed independently, are a spacious studio for two ("Studio") and a split-level, two-bedroom apartment for up to four people ("Elli"). There are also three separate, detached villas, all different to each other, with private swimming pools and up to three bedrooms for as many as six guests ("Argo", "Aphrodite" and "Orfeas").
All the apartments are strikingly modern and equipped to the highest standards, from pretty, colour co-ordinated fabrics and beautifully-varnished, oak wood floors to Miele two-ring gas hobs and state-of-the-art, individually programmable air-conditioning systems throughout.
The huge garden with extensive lawns for sunbathing is surrounded by bamboo and citrus groves, and cleverly linked to the house is one of the most attractively designed swimming pools you have ever come across, with a cascade gushing over rocks and a large, shallow paddling area for children.
On the lower ground floor, as well as a wine cellar, there is a fully-equipped gym and a sauna complete with ice-cold plunge tank. Sporting activity can be found at the horse-riding centre of Deres, a short drive inland through the unspoilt countryside that starts right behind Villa Iason, and on Maleme beach (10 minutes walk away) where there is a variety of watersports including pedalos, jet-skiing, water-skiing and parasailing.
Spacious lower floor studio (some steps below the ground level), suitable for 2+1 persons (approx. 35 sq.m.).
It has a living/bedroom with sitting area, TV, fully equipped kitchen, double bed behind a screen, bathroom with shower/WC, a small patio and a luggage compartment.
Split-level apartment suitable for 4+1 persons (approx. 120 sq.m.), located on the first and second floor. The first floor comprises a large dining room with a double sofa bed and a fully equipped kitchen, TV and WC. Marble stairs lead up to the two double bedrooms with ample wardrobe space, bathroom with shower/WC and a sea-facing extensive balcony.
Villa suitable for 6 persons (approx. 150 sq.m.). It has a living room with fully equipped kitchen, sitting area, TV, dining table and a terrace with steps leading down to a very private garden area with its swimming pool. There is also a bathroom with shower/WC from where steps lead up to the first floor with two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower/WC and balcony. Another bedroom is located on the lower ground floor.
Villa suitable for 6-8 persons (approx. 250 sq.m.). It has a spacious living room with a beautiful fireplace, a large dining room, a TV and a very big fully equipped kitchen (including dishwasher) with its own area for breakfast. There is also a small WC for the guests. At the ground floor there is a bedroom with shower/WC and upstairs two more bedrooms, each with shower cabins and separate balconies. This villa has a private pool in the garden in front of the house, which is surrounded by lush vegetation. VIP visitors from around the world occasionally enjoy staying at this villa.
Apartment house set back from the others, suitable for 4 persons (approx. 70 sq.m.). It has a living room with kitchen, TV, two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower/WC. There is also a terrace in front of the house with a private pool.
